Topic/Skill: Grammar 3B with Leslie Wagner
I shadowed Professor Leslie Wagner's 3B level grammar class today. In doing so, I was able to see her demonstrate patience and a calm demeanor that kept the students invested in the language learning projects throughout the class. The class started with an agenda on the board, a tool I found very useful, noting today's plans. This included: phrasal verbs, gerunds and infinitives, and beginning complex prepositions. Reiteration of previous days' grammar lessons were briefly addressed, before jumping into multiple activities. Partner activities and small group activities made up the duration of the time in the classroom, but what I noted to be very important were the different ways these activities occurred. Some of the LLPs used conversation as the primary tool, another was worksheet oriented, and a third was even more specific conversation. Professor Wagner was attentive to the students and walked around taking notes throughout all the activities. When asked a question she was unsure of, she clarified the question and offered to find out and report back. I found the class to move more slowly than I am used to in my personal classroom experience, but given the grammar-for-use outcome that is desired, this makes sense and I will do my best to be cognizant of the benefits of working at the students' pace.
