Topic/Skill: 1A Reading – Review Summaries, Continue with Environment text, Pass Out Reading Log
Teacher Presentation: Victoria Davis called attendance and welcomed everyone to class and the students stated their name, country of origin, and major for me. I introduced myself and stated why I wanted to take the TEFL course. Victoria gave clear instruction and checked in with the students to make sure they understood the information, vocabulary or instructions that were given. Victoria discussed their reading log and stated how to write a summary. A lot of this lesson was teacher focused rather than student focused by necessity, otherwise it's just a study hall type endeavor and the students aren't learning anything.
Classroom Management: She manages class really well. She commands attention and focus a little more forcefully, which I appreciate.
Materials: Handouts, white board
Student Participation: Students asked questions and for clarification on the lesson. Students worked in pairs taking turns reading the paragraphs provided and then summarizing them to each other.
Feedback Provided: Victoria provided positive feedback when the students were doing well and made corrections when they had difficulties. She was also good at fielding questions and clarifying things when issues arose. She circulated the room a lot to make sure that everyone was on track and not having issues. She also clarified a beautiful mistake that someone made. She was really responsive when students wanted to contribute to the discussion even when they made mistakes or offered incorrect answers.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: It helps the student's productivity to remain focused so it reenforces my desire to maintain firm control of the class. I really liked the active vocabulary learning and asking students to guess the meaning of new words before simply offering the definitions or examples.
