Today I met with my child tutee, Christian. He told me he is 6. The TV was on in the living room, where we were meeting, which made it difficult to keep his attention. Eventually, the TV was turned off after we used it to discuss what he was watching. I asked him about his favorite subject (science) and we looked at a picture of the Earth so I could ask questions about general vocabulary words (land, water, ocean, clouds). I wanted to gauge his level of knowledge without placing too much pressure on him. I asked him to show me his homework and he gave me his weekly assignment chart that included a few vocabulary words. We went over a few of the terms and I asked him to spell some of the words on the page for me. He did well with identifying each letter, but had trouble with some of the vocabulary. It was a fun meeting and I look forward to our next session. I plan to bring some visual aids regarding science to motivate him. Using the phone was less desirable because one of the younger brothers kept trying to press the screen!
