Raleigh TS #2

Date/Time: 5/17/17 (3pm)
Location: CIES
Topic/Skill: reading comprehension
Feedback provided to tutee: She did very well, so maybe her reading isn't the problem

When I met with Dasom for our second tutoring session, I brought some reading materials for her because she said she wanted to work on her reading comprehension. However, she was having no trouble understanding any of the materials that I brought even though they seemed to be about the same level as the assignment we worked on last week. Because she seemed to be breezing through these articles, I decided that we should focus on her speaking since she also wanted to work on that. She said that she was worried about her pronunciation and that she's shy when speaking English because she doesn't want to say anything wrong. I finally got her talking a little bit more though because I asked her some questions about places that she's visited. She seemed pretty comfortable with that because she was talking about cities in the US that I had also visited. I can tell that she's still nervous about her speaking though because she feels like pausing in between her speech is embarrassing. I just need to give her time to speak because she seems to be opening up slowly but surely. I think this session went really well because I tried to ask her about things that she actually wanted to talk about. I think that our tutoring sessions in the future will also focus on her speaking though because she's still very nervous. I really enjoyed getting to know a little bit more about her too.
