Valerie CO #2

I observed the Group 3A Listening Class with Angel Rios. As soon as students began walking in, Angel started playing a modern pop song by Bruno Mars. I thought this was an awesome tactic to get them in the mood of listening in English. The first activity was a dictation activity, where students had to write down sentences Angel read aloud. All the sentences were from the lecture the previous day, which I thought was important, because they have a little background knowledge in what they're trying to comprehend. He repeated the sentences as much as the students asked, instead of only saying them a certain amount of times. I'm curious if this is the way they do it in the 4A class, or if it's a little stricter on the amount of times the sentence is repeated.

The next activity was a review for their vocabulary quiz. Not only did he have students identify the meaning of the words, Angel then had the student who answered correctly, write the word out on the board. Once all words were up, he went around the room and had students use the more complex words in sentences, to make sure the comprehension was there.

I appreciate how up front Angel is with his students. He reminds them that they are in a partnership, not a dictatorship. Instead of give and take, he gives to them so they will give back. He is empathetic with them about the amount of work they are completing, not just within his class, but within all of their classes, yet he also shares the importance of why they're learning this second language.
