Alexa CO #3

Today I got to observe a 1A Listening class. The first thing the class did was go over the word of the day. The word of the day was overcast which was defined as 'describes weather when it is very cloudy (with no sun).' The second thing the class went over was the spelling from the day before. The day before, the students watched a song and did a correction close activity. The correction close activity had the song lyrics on the sheet of paper, but each line had a different word. The students had to listen closely to the song to find the incorrect word and write out the correct word on the blank line. The spelling was gone over because the students are going to have a spelling test the next day on some of the words that were used in the song. After that, the class went to the computer lab and had to listen to a story and fill out a listening log. There were five questions on the listening log: 1. What is the title of your listening?, 2. How long is your listening?, 3. What is the main idea?, 4. What are some new vocabulary?, and 5. Provide a summary of the listening. Everyone had the opportunity to pick the listening they were interested in which has its own pros and cons. The students get the opportunity to pick what interests them, meaning they will be more likely to listen to the story. However, it is hard to prime vocabulary when everyone is listening to a different story. I'm glad I got to observe this class as it really helped me think of some ideas I could do in my own classroom to help my future students with their listening skills.
