Alexa TS #1

On 5/24/17 from 12:00-1:00, I got to meet with my adult tutee, Ana. Ana is from Bazil and came to America last year in August. Although she expressed a desire to improve in her English-speaking skills, one of my first impressions of her was that she was very good at speaking English. Since today was our first time meeting, I decided it would be a good day to get to know each other and see what she was hoping to learn from tutoring. We got to talk about our families, hobbies, majors, favorite questions (subject, food, book, color, movie, etc), and more. When asking her what she would like to learn from tutoring, she told me that she would like to improve in her English-speaking skills for the TOEFL. I never knew this until she told me, but on the TOEFL there is a speaking section where you get asked a question and you have to respond within 45 seconds. You apparently have to give 2 reasons for your response and 2 examples. I was surprised to hear this because something like that could be hard for a native English speaker. She also mentioned wanted to learn more about expressions/idioms. Furthermore, when we were talking about our majors, she mentioned wanting to be able to understand the words used in her major (engineering), so maybe that is something we can work on as well. It was great getting to know more about her, and I am excited to get to help her with the things she mentioned.
