Topic/Skill: Abdulrahman partner presentation, religions, reliable reference sources (not Wikipedia)
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Burkina Faso

Abdulrahman has a presentation in his speaking class. The students were paired off to learn things about one another and their home country and then they have to present to the class and introduce their partner. Over lunch, Abdulrahman practiced his presentation with me as the audience and requested help or clarification on things he wasn't sure of. He mentioned that he used Wikipedia for some of his source information on Burkina Faso and I informed him that it is not a reliable source because anyone could go on there and write about things even if they are not qualified to do so. I just wanted him to make sure that going forward he used more reputable sources so that his information is accurate. He was asking about pronunciation on a couple of words and I made corrections and explained differences when he had issues with word choice/agreement. One of the things that came up was the population and why we don't say millions for 8 million because of the collective noun. I also explained the difference between unit and unity as he was trying to describe the meaning of the Burkina Faso flag colors. We talked about his partner's hobbies and her favorite foods. We also talked about the religions in Burkina Faso and then we talked about our religions. Abdulrahman asked if I was Christian and I stated that I was not. I also clarified that Christianity has various branches just like Islam and Judaism, which wasn't something he was aware of. He even managed to integrate one of the new vocabulary words that I taught him on Sunday, "surrounded". He did well practicing his presentation. I hope that he knocks it out of the park!
