Topic/Skill: 3A Speaking – Timed Speaking and Transcription with Angel

Teacher Presentation: Angel called attendance and welcomed everyone to class. I introduced myself and stated what I do and why I am taking the TEFL course and what I want to do with it. He had everyone jump onto computers as soon as they walked in to begin working on timed speaking. The got to practice two topics and then speak about them. They have 15 seconds to think and then practice speaking. Angel reenforced the use of transitions when speaking and offered examples. Students were allowed either make notes about whether or not they agree with the prompt statement or simply think about their argument. The students must then state their argument or opinion. He provided outlines to the students in order to help them organize their thoughts to respond to these statements. He is using more complicated statements to provoke more thoughtful answers. For instance, the two example prompts were: "Language is part of culture" and "Benefits of living in the USA". The final prompt for grade was an opinion: favorite movie and why.
Classroom Management: He manages the class really well. He's got a pretty strong hand. He reenforces that students can have fun and learn, but they need to be focused and serious when it comes to making progress and completing assignments.

Materials: Overhead, computers, headsets, and microphones

Student Participation: Students are interacting somewhat with each other regarding their progress on speaking practice exercises.

Feedback Provided: He was very positive when appropriate, but critical of some repeated mistakes as they were a higher level class. He also reminded them to pay careful attention to their transcription.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Angel is really quirky and funny! It's nice to see someone that is such a good balance between focused and fun. I really liked the lesson today. The students had record their opinion about something and then transcribe their recorded statement. Angel told them not to correct their spoken mistakes when transcribing, but returned their previous transcriptions with suggested corrections or feedback for them to change and learn from. This is such a brilliant lesson because the students are integrating all of their skills: speaking, listening, writing, and grammar in the same lesson.
