Date/Time: May 25, 2017; 7:00-8:00 P.M.
Location: Campus Circle study rooms
Topic: Reading comprehension, vocabulary, and reading aloud.
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Worked on reading log homework, reading aloud and pronunciation, and a few vocabulary words along the way.
I had my second meeting with Saeed at the Campus Circle study rooms tonight. He had told me that he wanted to focus on reading during this session and so I had pulled up a few short passages from the internet for us to look at together and then answer questions to. After reading and answering questions to the first passage he told me that he had a reading log that he would like to pick something to read for. We went on a website that he uses called Breakingnewsenglish.com, which allows you to choose a level and read daily news articles that cater to that level on english knowledge. We read a story about eating disorders in the modeling industry, I had Saeed read aloud to me, picking out words that he was unfamiliar with, as well as correcting his pronunciation as he read. He chose 5 words he did not know and wrote them in his reading log, and said that he would complete the definitions after our session. While Saeed was reading aloud I noticed something that we talked about in class today- minimal pairs. In words that had the letter "p" in them he tended to pronounce the sound for "b", which is very common in arabic students learning English. I was able to explain this to him and it truly felt good being able to make him aware of the pronunciation error and give reason behind it. After I brought it up I noticed that he was more conscious of words with "P" in them and made an effort to correct his error! It was a good session and we scheduled good times to meet up next week and I truly look forward to seeing the progress we make then.
