On Thursday
afternoon, May 11, 2017, from 2:00pm to 2:50pm, I observed Olivia’s Level 2A
listening class. Olivia actually had a
substitute teacher, so the class watched the movie Inside Out. Before the movie
the class read a child’s impressions of the movie and answered some questions
to get them thinking about the plot.
Then they watched the movie with subtitles. I felt that this was a level appropriate
movie for the students. My conversation
partner was in this class. She said she
enjoyed watching this movie because it was funny, and she could understand
it. I loved seeing the students watch
this movie and laugh at all the right places.
This showed me that they were listening and comprehending the plot. I know that when I can understand humor in
another language, I feel like I am really getting a grasp of the language. I could tell that these students felt the
same way. Listening to movies or using
other cultural resources can really grow the students’ intrinsic motivation for
language learning.
