On Thursday, May
18, 2017, from 11:55am to 12:55pm, I met with my adult tutee, Natalia, at the
CIES. Since our goal is to improve
Natalia’s English speaking and listening skills, I brought an activity to
prompt our conversation. I made
flashcards with about twenty different topics.
We took turns selecting a topic, and then we each talked for about a minute. The other person listened and then asked
questions. This worked really well
because it brought up new topics that we had not discussed before. We talked about music, today’s morning
routine, art, travel, our personal characteristics, our hobbies, family, and
Tallahassee. This week I spoke slowly
and gave Natalia time to speak. She
could usually come up with the word or phrase she needed when I gave her time
to think. She asked me words she did not
know, and I corrected words after she spoke.
In addition to being a good session for Natalia to practice speaking, I
learned a great deal about Natalia, her interests, and her home country,
Ukraine. I am going to try to come up
with other conversation activities for next week.
