Christiana TS #1

Date/Time: May 16, 2017 7:00-8:00pm
Location: Starbucks on Tennessee Street
Topic/Skill: Grammar (Modal verb- Can/Can't; Simple Present Tense)

I met with my tutee, Saeed for the first time yesterday at Starbucks and spent the first 10-15 minutes getting to know him. I learned that he moved here about 2 1/2 months ago from Kuwait and that he knew a little bit of English from some of his traveling before coming here. He likes speaking the most and writing the least and we decided that we would take our sessions week by week focusing on practicing things that he may be struggling on or have been introduced recently in his CIES classes. After we went over what his strengths and weaknesses seem to be, he told me that he had a quiz in his Grammar class in the morning and that he would like to practice s a few of the topics that would be covered. The quiz was going to be on the simple present tense and the modal verb can/can't so I found a few exercises online and had him practice the skills and checked them as he went, some of the exercises he really enjoyed while others were not his favorite so I made note of the types of exercises that peaked his interest and plan on using those in our upcoming tutoring sessions. We spent the last ten minutes discussing the pronunciation of can and can't and how it can sometimes be hard to differentiate the two when Americans are saying them in conversation. We then decided we would meet again on Friday and work on reading comprehension in our next session.
