Date/Time: May 17, 2017; 3:00-4:00 P.M.
Location: Starbucks on Tennessee
Topic: CIES and speaking English
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Learning English in Taiwan
Today, Hui-Sin and I met outside the CIES building and walked to Starbucks together. On the way, we talked about how her classes are going and who her favorite teachers are at CIES. When we got to Starbucks, I helped her order, because she was really wanting a chocolate drink but was unsure about which drink would actually have chocolate in it.
When we sat down, Hui-Sin immediately started talking and seemed very excited about telling me all about CIES. She talked about the activities that the students get to do on Fridays and she gave me a run-down of all the backgrounds of the students at CIES. She especially loves talking with a Saudi Arabian woman who is also a physical therapist.
Our most interesting topic was about learning English in Taiwan. Hui-Sin was taught how to read and write English but was never taught how to listen and speak. She talked about how useless English felt to her because she couldn't use it if a tourist needed help. She said that she's glad people in America want to go over to other countries and teach English.
I did have to correct her pronoun usage and some pronunciation. She even pulled out a notepad and wrote down any words she didn't understand or had to translate from Chinese to English. I thought that was a great idea, because she's taking what's being said in conversation and learning how to apply it on her own time.
