Alexandra CO #1

On Thursday morning, May 11, 2017, from 9:00am to 9:50am, I observed Victoria’s Level 4A grammar class.  The students had an oral quiz in the computer lab on the past perfect and past perfect continuous verb tenses.  Victoria wrote the instructions clearly on the board and gave examples for each quiz section.  Being in the lab and having an oral quiz seemed to make the students anxious, but Victoria made sure they understood the quiz and directions before they began.  Victoria actually let me help with the quiz since she had an odd number of students.  I switched off speaking with three students of different nationalities, and I was very impressed with their English skills.  I tried to listen for grammatical errors in their responses.  I practiced modeling the correct sentences and prompting them to answer the questions properly.  I was surprised that a grammar quiz was oral, but it made sense for a communicative approach to teaching grammar.  I felt that I learned a lot from interacting with the students and watching Victoria give instructions, work with technology, and give a communicative grammar quiz.
