Topic/Skill: Reading Group 3A Felicia Clapetta
I observed Felicia’s group 3 reading class this morning. She
started this class much like she started the class I observed earlier, by
engaging in casual conversation with her students about their day. After
engaging in conversation with them she had them flip to an article in their
book that they had started the day before. Felicia asked them to tell her what
the article was about to make sure they still recalled the article and that
they had understood it. She then proceeded to have them read a short section of
the article which had some comprehension questions next to it. While they were
reading the article, I sat next to Felicia and read the article they were
reading so that I would know what they were talking about and could be more
engaged in the class. The article was from FSView and it was about higher education
and how it has a different significance to younger generations. After she gave
them about five minutes to read the article she asked them to discuss and
answer the comprehension questions with the person next to them and gave them
about ten minutes to do so. Once the time was up she began discussing the
comprehension questions with the class. The questions ranged from asking what
specific words or phrases, such as “means to an end,” meant in general and in
the text. She then told then explained to them that even though the article was
harder than normal, it was important because that would be the kind of articles
they would be reading during their master’s and PhD studies. Felicia told them
that they might not always know some words while reading articles so it is
important for them to learn how to use context clues to determine the meaning
of such words.
