Topic/Skill: Speaking Group 3A Angel Rios
Topic/Skill: Speaking Group 3A Angel Rios
I observed Angel
Rios’ group 3 speaking class this afternoon. Like the other two classes I had
observed earlier, Angel began the class by engaging in small conversations with
the students. Once he was ready to begin he told the class that they would be
doing timed speaking the following day so this class was to help them prepare. Angel
proceeded by explaining what they would be doing during the timed speaking and
that it would be a group discussion, almost like a debate. He then had them
open their books where he had them read phrases to help aid their discussion,
such as how to politely disagree with someone and how to transition the
conversation from one person to the next. He told them what he was expecting
from them and gave them a short rubric on what they would be graded on, he
explained that he would be recording each groups conversation in order to be able
to grade each person individually. After he finished going over his
expectations he played the students an audio clip from a previous groups’ discussion
and he told them that this is what they should not be doing. He would pause the
clip and explain to them what they were doing wrong, such as talking over one
another, being rude, and not allowing everyone to speak. After all of that,
Angel put the students in groups of four and gave them the topic “homework
should not be allowed. Do you agree or disagree?” and had them do a mock group
presentation/debate. While they groups were talking, he would walk around the
class and listen to each groups conversation. Once there were about five
minutes left of class he went to the front of the classroom and told them some
of the things that he liked the groups were doing and once again reminded them
of his expectations for the following day.
