Professor: Andrew Wilson
Class: Listening
The class started with a quick glance at the day's agenda and then Andrew jumped right in with a word of the day. The word was mileage and Andrew defined the word and then asked the students what exactly it meant. After the word of the day, the students went into a warm-up. I liked the aspect of starting the class by having the students build on techniques they already know. I was asked to use past tense and say what I did the night before. From there, the students had to repeat what the person before them did and then add on their own sentence. The students then did textbook work and some other listening tasks. Andrew allowed for pre-listening, and after he would let the students work on the questions attached to the listening task. He would also give the students any extra vocabulary words they would need to know for the lesson.
I really liked Andrew's teaching style. He acted out a lot of words so the students could learn visual cues or guess at what he was saying. He also generally gave some kind of feedback. If a student did well, then he told them and made sure they felt reassured while speaking English. His way of correcting the students leaned towards how I feel about correcting speaking mistakes. He would repeat the error and allow the students to pause in their thought process. Generally the students would correct themselves, but occasionally he had to tell them where they went wrong. Overall, the students really seemed to enjoy the class and respond well to Andrew's teaching style.
