Date/Time: 19 May / 7:00PM - 10PM
Location: Proof Brewing Co. and Blaze Pizza
Topic discussed: Drinking culture,
formal/informal language, dogs, and food.
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner
learned: I spent my Friday evening hanging out with Jiwon and her friend
from CIES, Dasom, and discussed a multitude of topics. I was surprised to hear
that beer is not only more expensive in South Korea than it is in the U.S. but
is also usually weaker/watered down. I knew a little about Korean culture
beforehand in regards to how they speak differently to one another/use
different titles depending on age and sometimes gender and we discussed this a
bit further. We came to the realization that I happened to be born the same
year as them -so even though Jiwon is technically younger and her friend is
technically older, we would still all be considered "equals"... for
lack of a better word! Anyway, I'm sure many of you all have been to Proof @
railroad square before but for those who haven't, people frequently bring their
dogs to this bar and that night was no exception. My conversation partner and her friend
were especially enjoying getting to pet them. Dasom told me she has a dog back
home that she misses so of course we proceeded to share pup pictures with each
other. Eventually, a live band started playing and it became too loud to hear
each other talk. We then decided to head to Blaze Pizza which brought up the
topic of food and it was surprising to hear how much both of them love American
food. In fact, it's relatively easy to find in Korea, but according to Jiwon,
the portions are much smaller yet more expensive.
