Topic/Skill: Research Project
Feedback Provided to Tutee: This was my first time meeting with my child tutee, PJ. His class at school is working on creating their own Zoobooks Magazine with an animal of their choice. PJ chose to do his project on Tigers. I think the purpose of this project is having the students get acquainted with finding and using sources to do research in order to write about given topics. Before I could meet with PJ, he had already done some research on tigers and began writing. But, because PJ had only gathered information from one source, what he wrote wasn't really in his own words. I focused our tutoring session on helping PJ use the same information from more than one source to help him rephrase his research into his own words. This allowed me to assess his reading comprehension skills. PJ had just a little difficulty expressing his own ideas which I hope to work on with him and help him develop.
Lesson(s) about Tutoring and/or the Tutee You Learned: This was my first time tutoring a child. The biggest lesson I learned from this session is that I need to be more familiar with the level of children in different grades. Before I worked with PJ, I wasn't really sure what level of work children his age would be doing. I am going to work on tailoring my sessions to better benefit his improvement.
