On Thursday, I observed a group 3B listening class with Felicia Ciappetta. The first thing I noticed about the class is that everyone seemed to be in a good mood when they walked in, and they were happy to talk to her and each other. This class seemed very relaxed and ready to talk to each other. They were all making jokes, and Professor Ciappetta seems to have a good relationship with them because they can all joke back and forth together. They were just entering data into a google doc, so I didn't get to see much of what they do in class. I asked Professor Ciappetta about the activity once they got started though. They were working in pairs, and they had been assigned a survey where they had to go around campus the day before and ask random American people that they met to answer some questions for the survey. The survey was about sports, and they tried to interview people of different ages, ethnicities, and genders. I think this activity was used to get the students more comfortable with their speaking because they had to be able to communicate with strangers, so I think it helped build their confidence in their speaking abilities. They had to come up with the survey questions as a class, and the different questions were supposed to evoke different responses from the interviewees. Overall, it was a really fun class just because it had such a relaxed yet happy vibe. I really enjoyed seeing the students interact with each other for this activity.
