Date/Time: May 10, 2017; 3:00-4:15 P.M.
Location: The CIES patio (outside the lounge)
Topic: Weather and food
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Taiwanese culture and what Hui-Sin misses the most about Taiwan.
Hui-Sin and I met in the Student Lounge at the CIES building and decided to go outside and talk. Hui-Sin is a physical therapist in Taiwan and decided to come to America because her friend recommended the CIES program at FSU. She has only been here three weeks and her English is understandable but a couple of times she had to write out what she meant in Chinese and translate it for me.
I originally did not know Hui-Sin is from Taiwan. Her CIES information says Chinese and she explained that Taiwanese people speak Chinese and identify with Chinese culture. She is enjoying America and is loving the Florida weather. In Taiwan, she said, it's very humid and hot. Plus, the days are shorter in Taiwan and she likes the longer days in Florida.
She misses Taiwan--especially the food. But she is trying out different foods while she is here and is loving the experience. She mentioned that food in America costs more money than in Taiwan and that she is having to adjust a little to the price difference. She also misses the night markets in Taiwan. The night markets are full of street food and she was very excited while explaining all the different desserts you can buy at a market.
She has not done a lot in Tallahassee yet, and I told her that next time we'll pick somewhere different and try out new things.
