Topic Discussed: Getting acquainted
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner
learned: I met Mengyu at Strozier and began with a modified version of the
questionnaire recommended for our initial interactions with tutees. Although
not required for conversation partners, I thought some of the questions would
serve as some good ice breakers. After this, we simply went back and forth
asking each other about interests, hobbies, and so on. I learned he is an avid
poker player, and likes to go to Las Vegas to play but also like private games
with friends. He is extremely capable with English, and while I did notice a
few errors in his speech they were relatively few and far between, and
virtually never interfered with my ability to understand what he meant. He
seems like a very nice young man, but left the impression of being a very
serious-minded student, a bit formal at our initial meeting. I admit to there
having been a few silences which I felt needed to be filled with chatter, but
since it was our very first meeting I’m not overly concerned about this. It
definitely is a good reminder that everyone has their own personality and we
can’t expect to “hit it off” with everyone with whom we interact, but that we
must still make sure we are friendly and approachable despite this.
