Keira TS #16

Keira TS #16

Date/Time: July 5, 2017 - 6:35pm

Location: Starbucks

Topic/Skill: Superlatives

Today was my final tutoring session with Hani, though I told him I would be happy to meet again if he ever wanted more help, or just an opportunity to practice speaking and listening in English. He had learned about superlatives in class today and wanted me to explain them in a little more detail. He understood it fairly quickly, but needed me to spend some additional time explaining their use and rules. We talked about the difference between ending an adjective in "-er" or "-est" when making comparisons, and when to use "-est" and when to use "the most" in making a superlative. We also went over using "more" and using the word "than" in comparisons of two people or things. We went very slowly through each section on the handout he had received in class so we could thoroughly cover each way superlatives are used.

Feedback Provided to Tutee: Much of this session was spent making examples for the different types of superlatives we covered. I would provide an example, and Hani would provide one of his own. He did not seem to have a lot of trouble with this section, but it was clear he felt much more comfortable with this topic after our session than before. All he needed was some additional time and practice in order to fully master the concept. The one thing we did pay special attention to was the irregular superlative versions of "good" and "bad." I told him these words would most likely require memorization, since they are irregular, but I did create example sentences that I hoped would help him remember to associate "good" with "better" and "bad" with "worse." (These were: "Hani is better at hunting with falcons than Keira is." "Keira is worse at hunting with falcons than Hani is." During our initial tutoring session Hani told me he hunted with falcons back home in Saudi Arabia, and it most likely goes without saying that I have never held a falcon in my life.)

Lesson(s) about Tutoring and/or the Tutee You Learned: Hani was such a pleasure to tutor, especially since he was always in a good mood, always ready to learn, and always prepared to do whatever I had planned for him, or ready with a question of his own. The fact that he put in so much effort on his own time made my work as his tutor, I think, considerably easier than it could have been. I know this may not always be the case, and there will likely be times when I have students who are not nearly as motivated. However, I learned a lot through tutoring Hani, like how much preparation I need to put into getting ready for each session, and how just taking an hour to cover one topic in depth can be very beneficial.
