Topic/Skill: Countable nouns and articles
Saeed and I worked on articles, as that was something I noticed in the diagnostic that was a problem. I devised an activity where I would find an object (or group of objects) that served as a noun somewhere in the room and had him create a sentence based off that, using the proper article. He also requested that I correct all the grammar and spelling in his sentences as well. It became apparent that he was making a lot of errors and I could feel him getting a little frustrated by the end of the session. When I asked him if everything was ok because he was visibly frustrated, I was surprised to hear that he was frustrated because it was "too easy." I had a hard time not pointing out that he was making repeated basic grammar mistakes and it was obviously not too easy for him. In the future, I need to find a way to address this and rationalize the activity without ending up talking down to someone who is 11 years my senior. He asked if we could focus on speech correction in future sessions and I agreed, but told him written grammar basics are still important.
