Topics: ESL Articles

Abdulrahman and I discussed the ESL articles that I sent him. http://www.elcivics.com/civics-rights-everyone.html and http://www.elcivics.com/national-anthem-usa.html I thought these were both appropriate topics for discussion seeing as the 4th of July just passed. The first article is about the Star Spangled Banner, who wrote it, when, why, etc. I inquired with Abdulrahman if he had known any of the details contained in the article prior to reading it. He said that he knew a little. He knew that Francis Scott Key wrote the anthem, that it is based on a British drinking song and that one should stand and place their hand over their heart when it is played. I asked him about when the Saudi Arabian national anthem is played and if he knew it. He responded and said that the anthem is played every morning in school and that they also have to stand when it happens.

He asked me if we played/sang the anthem every day in school and I told him that we said the pledge of allegiance in the morning rather than the anthem. He mentioned that when he first arrived in Tallahassee, before he spoke/understood any English, he went to an FSU baseball game and realized that everyone was standing when the music played and deduced that it must be the anthem so he copied the people around him.

The other article was regarding American rights and freedoms and discussed some of the differences between the two. It was an interesting piece. It mentioned some interesting facts about the Bill of Rights, when/why it was written and who the writer was. Also, it listed some of the famous American civic/government names and what they supported. Abdulrahman did not know many of these facts and thought it was interesting that the beginning of the Constitution is the Bill of Rights.

I also sent Abdulrahman a short documentary of 51 Amazing Facts about America. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnbPh-kbGG0 It's about an hour long and there are some really interesting facts about each of the different states. The video is a great tool for English listening as it is spoken pretty clearly and one can learn a variety of things about America. He watched some of it the other night when I sent it so we discussed some of the facts that he could remember such as "out of all the United States, the state of Maine is the closest to Africa". I also sent it to my other tutoring partner Sheila.
