As is usually the case when talking to Saeed, I had a great conversation. We started off by talking about what he did over the break (visited his cousin in Mobile) and then talked about the history of my hometown (Pensacola). Somehow we transitioned to pets. Apparently, keeping pets is not a common practice where he's from. Most people have a camel or a horse. He has a camel. The camel has been with them for a long time and is very sweet. She loves Saeed's father more than anyone. When they have to feed her while their father is gone, his family has to put on their father's clothes because the camel won't come unless she smells Saeed's father. I didn't have a camel, but I told him about my own unique pet that I used to have--a chicken. He was amused at the idea of having a chicken for a pet, so I gave him my usual lecture on how smart chickens are. He saw my chicken and raised me a falcon--a bird that people keep in Saudi Arabia. He particularly loves Snowy Falcons, and I can't blame him. He showed me a picture. They're beautiful birds. From there, I told him how my father used to raise carrier pigeons when I was younger and he said his brother used to do the same thing. That's not something I've ever had in common with someone before.
