Topic/Skill: American university terms and application deadlines
Saeed started our session off by talking about the universities that he's looking to apply to and we started on a discussion of university terms such as undergrad, grad, post-grad, bachelors, masters, PHD, freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, Associates, etc. After talking about vocab for a while, he asked if I could help clarify some of the application deadlines and requirements on the schools he was looking at. I helped him navigate the sites to find the information he was looking for. He asked me for some information on the states the schools were in (South Dakota and Tennessee) and I provided what limited knowledge I have of them both. I pulled up pictures to supplement what I was telling him. All in all, it was more of a cultural lesson, but an important one if he's going to go to an American university. This session made me realize that I take a lot of terms for granted that don't necessarily have direct translations in other languages when it comes to school life.
