Kaitlin CO #2
The second class I observed was a Speaking class. The teacher had forgotten that someone would be observing his class, but he quickly and graciously accommodated me. He started off the lesson by writing the agenda on the board, as well as the Word of the Day, which was waste. He had the students volunteer their definitions and asked about all the different things you could waste (ex: time, money, food). From there he transitioned into a discussion of vegans and vegetarians. He had them break off into pairs and discuss the dietary restrictions, if they know any vegans or vegetarians, and if they think that they could be a vegetarian or vegan. This prompted some very passionate discussions. If there's one thing that all people have, its a love of food. Using popsicle sticks with the students' names on them, the teacher called on pairs to give their answers, correcting some speech errors. The main one he corrected was "I don't think I can be a vegetarian" vs. "I don't think I could be a vegetarian." After that, he had them do a skit activity and then gave out a test. On the test, they had to correct the sentences and use vocabulary words. He assisted with the instructions a little bit, but mostly left them to work on their own.
