Feedback Provided to Tutee: I thought it would be fun to use an American television show for teaching material. My tutee, Seongeun, told me in our first meeting that she really wanted to watch an American drama. So, today I used the first scene from Gilmore Girls episode 1, season 1. First, I had Seongeun watch through the entire scene without closed-captions, without going over any vocabulary, and without a task. I wanted her to focus on what was going on in the scene and try to understand through context clues. Then, we watched the scene two more times, but while she listened I had her fill-in-the-blanks for missing dialogue. The show is very quick-paced, so it was somewhat challenging to keep up. To go over the answers to the activity, Seongeun and I role-played by reading the dialogue answer key out loud with one another. She checked her answers as we read along. I also prepared a vocabulary list of terms and expressions, as well as cultural references, to help her better understand the scene. We went over this list, and I answered questions of hers before watching the scene one last time. After we finished watching the scene, I asked Seongeun to tell me about what we watched.

Lesson(s) about Tutoring and/or the Tutee You Learned: I notice that when Seongeun speaks she does try very hard to monitor her speech, but this slows done her speech rate. I think this activity was fun for Seongeun, and I feel like it will help improve her listening skills and both her receptive and productive vocabulary.
