Alexa TS #8
Today (6/14/17, 6:00-7:00 PM) I met with Sultan for tutoring, and we went over a lot of different things. The first thing we went over is what formatting a paper should look like. I showed him the introduction, the three body paragraphs, and the conclusion. He wanted to know how to write a paper about the wh- questions in relation to his favorite drama while using the correct format that I showed him. I was a little confused because I have never heard of a paper being written that way. However, I tried to help him the best I could. After that, we went over five different academic words (they were related to space) and five words related to airport travel. He actually requested that I bring him 5 new words every time we meet up so that he can continue to improve in his vocabulary. Next, we went through a story called The Puppy and the Kitten. After the last time we did tutoring, it was obvious that I needed to pick a lower level reading passage. The passage I chose was at a first grade level, and it shocked me to see that there were still some words that he could not pronounce. He read through the whole thing and answered the comprehension questions pretty well. He wanted to know what a summary meant and how it compared to a paper that is written in a certain format. I summarized the story so he would have an example and basically told him that a summary is what the story says but shorter. After giving the example, he was able to understand it better. I have also noticed that it is really helpful when he understands the Arabic word for each vocabulary word that I introduce to him.
