Valerie TS #4

The last time I met with P.J., we finished up Frindle. P.J. had just started a new Reading Camp that morning and was pretty exhausted from having to take a lengthy placement test, so instead of jumping right into Holes, we played a couple games of hangman. He seemed to perk up a bit once I asked if he'd like to play. We each picked a common word in the book and he got mine ("Lincoln" for the elementary school the main character went to) almost right away.

He was already ten chapters deep into Holes, so we hopped right in where he left off. Though I've read the book several times, I asked him for a summary of what's happened so far. Where he stumbled, I offered linguistic support, but overall he did a great job of remembering details. We began reading in Chapter 11 and as I could see he had just about had it with reading for the day, I read most of Chapter 11 aloud and then asked him to pick up where I had stopped.

While checking for comprehension, we had some "Ah-Ha!" moments, that helped him to understand what was happening and become more interested in what he was reading. Once we finished up three chapters of Holes, I had him tell me what he thought about the characters, to check his comprehension.
