Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Listened to American music and discussed meaning, and new vocabulary and phrases.
Today I picked Jiwon up from CIES for our final meeting and we headed to the study rooms at her apartment. I wanted to make today a fun lesson so I asked her if she would like to pick out a few current and popular songs in English and discuss them and go over vocabulary and phrases that she didn't understand or catch. We picked "Cold Water" by Justin Bieber and Major Lazer, "Whatcha Say" by Jason Derulo, and "24K Magic" by Bruno Mars. We listened through each a couple of times and discussed the content and what the song means and then pulled up the lyrics which helped her pick up on some of the words and phrases that she missed. We then picked out those words and phrases and broke them down until she understood the meanings. After all of this we listened to each song respectively to see if she could pick up on the vocabulary words and phrases that we had gone over and to solidify those meanings. Jiwon really enjoyed today's session and it seemed to really help her think of the music she already listens to as a possible tool for her english studies. We chatted a bit about her upcoming trip to New York and said our goodbyes. She was truly an awesome person to tutor and I feel like we both learned a lot from each other.
