Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned:
Today, Tingwei and I met at Chipotle to get lunch together. At first, I was just talking to him about different things that you find at different Mexican places like salsa, queso, and guacamole. He said that he had never seen or heard of guacamole, and he said it didn't look appetizing at all because it's green. I also talked to him about the avocado craze that's going through the US right now. Then we were talking about math because we were talking about the metric system. I was telling him that I really like math, and he asked me why I didn't pick a major with math. I just told him it's because I wanted to work in the healthcare field for the rest of my life. Then, we were just talking about how schools differ in America and Taiwan with the placement exams for high school that they used to have when he was in high school. Then, we were talking about school districts and how parents just try to pick a good school district when choosing a place to live once they have kids. Then we talked about how he is left-handed, and he said that parents in Taiwan will usually force their children to do everything (especially write) with their right hands. He said that his parents didn't do that to him, but he definitely struggled with learning to write because he would do the mirror image of things while learning to write. He also talked about how it was annoying that computers are designed for right-handed people, so he had to just get used to that while going through school. Today was a really great conversation, and he seemed a lot more relaxed than usual and had more energy since he's not in class at the moment. He said he's not really excited to have a break though since he's so bored now.
