On Monday, June 5, 2017, from 5:00pm to
5:45pm, I met with my child tutee at his house.
We started out with a group game of Simon Says to get all the kids
listening and involved. This also served
as a review of some of the words we covered last time. Then Pais and I worked on colors. I made matching cards with each color and
then its name on another card. We tried
to play the game, but Pais’s reading skills were lower than I thought. He really struggled to read the cards. So, we ended up just verbally naming the
colors together. We tried to practice
sounding out the letters and actually reading the words, but this was not easy. While I feel like I can handle basic tutoring
in listening and speaking skills, I realized that reading is much harder to
teach. I do not know enough about
phonics and basic reading to teach another person. This is something I should research, so that
I can better help beginner English learners in the future.
