Jiwon and I had some technical difficulties during last nights tutoring session so we had to improvise to make it work. The wifi was down at he study rooms and so the websites I had pulled up with articles to practice reading and pronunciation worksheets wouldn't load. Jiwon luckily had a copy of "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" that she's been reading in English and brought it down from her apartment and we decided she would read a chapter out loud, working on her pronunciation and reading comprehension along the way. Harry Potter proved to be a difficult book to read aloud, with all of the names of characters and places being very strange and there being a lot of shortened speech as well as words written to be read in varying accents from the UK. Jiwon stepped up to the challenge and did a very good job for the most part and I jotted down words that were difficult for her to read, focusing more on high frequency words over the names and accented words she would not have to say in day to day conversation. I also explained the written out forms of accented words in order for her to understand what it was they were trying to say in certain sentences without spending too much time on them so we could talk more about the content of the chapter and some of the words that were often hard for her to pronounce. After we reached the end of the chapter we briefly talked about what went on and what was happening in the book up to that point, this was very easy for me because I love the Harry Potter series and have read all of the books multiple times so I felt very knowledgeable on the subject matter. After discussing for a few minutes we went over the list of words that she had a tough time with and I put them aside to add to the worksheet of trouble words I am compiling for her to practice later on. We ended our session and decided to meet this afternoon to work on some writing practice at Starbucks.
