Raleigh TS #11

Date/Time: 6/12/17 (4:30pm)
Location: Grand Marc
Topic/Skill: reading
Feedback provided to tutee: She seems to understand the material. She just needs to work on some grammar for her summaries, and she needs to work on her word choice to make her message more clear.

Today, I met with Dasom to help her study for some of her finals. She asked me to help me with a reading and writing assignment that she has to do. She has to find an academic article and a recent news article and write a summary for both of them. We were working on her academic article today. She found an article on North Korea and their nuclear program. It was an article that talked about what North Korea is doing in the nuclear field and how the US should respond. It was split into sections by different articles, so I told her to summarize each section in 3 sentences. The first section just talked about the progress North Korea has made in the nuclear field, and she understood this part just fine. Her summary made complete sense. She just had some grammar mistakes that I helped her correct. The next section was a little bit harder for her though. It was titled "Avoiding the temptation to do nothing." She kept getting caught up on certain things from the way they were worded. One part she kept confusing was talking about how North Korea has contempt for its neighboring countries and that its threats could now be a reality with their nuclear success. It mentioned what the US might do in a situation when an ally might be attacked, so she thought that North Korea's goal was to test our alliances. That wasn't what the article was trying to convey though. I eventually got the point across to her after having her reread it and explain it to me. We only got through the first 2 sections today, so she's going to finish the article on her own. I'm going to look over her summaries on Wednesday and help her make any corrections, and we'll probably work on the other article as well. Overall, this was a great session though because I could tell that she really was getting everything and not just saying she did to move on.
