Valerie TS #3

P.J. and I met again for tutoring the day after we'd read through six chapters. He was determined to finish the book and immediately dived into reading. We carried on like the times before, stopping for any words he stumbled over and at the end of the chapters to recap what had just happened.

The story was in its climax during the beginning of this session, with so much buzz surrounding the main character, Nick's, new word, "frindle." P.J. asked if "frindle" had actually been made into a word since there was a dictionary-type definition printed in the book. I asked him to look it up for me for the next time we met, so we can see if fictional Nick made a difference in the real world.

As he was eager to finish the book during this session, he began to forget about punctuation a bit, so I had him slow down. I asked him to be sure to stop after periods and give slight pauses where commas were written, as this would help him read the book in the correct intonation, which would aid to his comprehension of the story.

We read through almost all of the novel, stopping at the last chapter due to our session going a little over an hour already. The characters in the book were playing board games at one point, so we stopped to talk about our favorites. I asked if he'd ever played hangman and he said one of his tutors has used the game as a review once. I thought that was a great idea and plan to play one or two games of hangman once we finish Frindle, during our next session. We plan to start Holes next, as he's already began reading the novel.
