Elaina TS#2

Date/Time: May14, 1-2:30
Location: Starbucks
Topic/Skill: Reading comprehension and revising
Feedback provided to tutee: We worked with reading a passage, and then going over words that Turki was unsure of. I would look them up in the dictionary, have him read the definition, and then have him rewrite the definition in his own words and use the term in a sentence. He would often try to look it up translated into Arabic, but I would have him only use the English definition and he would understand it on his own without the translation.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that I must be as patient as possible with students, because even if they don't understand it on the first try they will eventually be able to get it with just a little bit of guidance and explanation. I also learned that there are many different exercises that help work towards the same goal and keep learning interesting; such as rewriting sentences, summarizing passages, and using vocabulary terms in different contexts. When speaking with Turki before/after tutoring, I learned more about him and where he is from, how long he has been doing CIES and how he is enjoying Tallahassee.
