Date/Time:
8 May / 1:00 - 1:50PM
Topic/Skill:
(3B Speaking class) Agenda: Finished sharing student PowerPoint presentations
on social media sites and apps i.e. Timed Speaking
Teacher
Presentation: N/A - The class apparently picked up where they left off
last class so there wasn't a formal introduction on anything new.
Classroom
Management: It was quite clear from the beginning of class that the instructor
has built a quality rapport with her students. She facilitated class discussion
by encouraging the students to ask questions to the presenting student if
anything was unclear.
Materials:
Whiteboard, computer/internet access, PowerPoint, overhead projector, timer
Student Participation: During
each of the presentations, the instructor had the other students write at least
two sentences - one thing they thought each presenter did well and one thing
they thought each presenter could improve on - which was to be turned in after
class. Additionally, she had them break into groups of four during the last few
minutes of the class to discuss a question she had prepared for them: "How
has social media improved or enhanced communication or how has it deteriorated
communication or made communication worse?" Finally, they shared their opinions
collectively. I especially enjoyed this part of the class because everyone
seemed eager to share their ideas and the responses were interesting to say the
least.
Feedback
Provided: As each of the students presented, the instructor took notes on their
performance using her laptop. She offered plenty of both positive and negative
feedback.
Lesson(s)
on teaching you learned: Ms Felicia Ciappetta let me glance over the rubric she
had prepared for the speaking assignment. It focused on organization, language
use, delivery, and completeness of the task. I thought it was quite helpful to
see the rubric in use. I can understand how critical it is to have a fairly
specific and detailed rubric to simplify grading as well as help the students
understand why they got the grade they did.
