Date/Time: May 14, 2017; 2:00pm-4:30pm
Location: Starbucks on Tennessee
Topic/Skill: Culture, learning English, work, weather, movies
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: America culture vs. Saudi Arabia, laws, weather, etc.
Abdulrahman wants to practice trade law. I looked up some basic law terms in the hope that we would talk about his career aspirations a little more, but he was having difficulty as he didn't know the vocabulary. We talked about the differences between America and Saudi Arabia with regard to probate law, e.g. when someone dies so he learned the word inheritance as we discussed the differences. We also talked about weather and how hot it is in Saudi Arabia in the summer 50ÂșC and he didn't know Celsius either so that was cool. Saudi Arabia has sandstorms during the summer instead of hurricanes so I'm in no rush to visit...
Abdulrahman has some difficulty with pronunciation sometimes and asked for help. For instance, hearing and pronouncing the distinct difference between bitter, better, and butter is tricky. We also talked about why you have to add an 's' to a verb when stating "he likes" or "she works". We also talked about where I grew up and that it was pretty much surrounded by water, so that was new word for him as well. He mentioned that has a presentation in his speaking class on Tuesday so we discussed some good preparation techniques such as timing oneself while practicing the presentation or taking a video while practicing to locate errors as well as helping one to remember the content of the presentation. He really likes listening to music so I recommended finding the song lyrics so that he could read along while he listens. We talked for over two hours, it was great. :)
