Feedback: I told Soyoung that her English is very clear and asked to make sure it is okay to correct her English. I generally corrected her by repeating what she said with the articles or tenses that she missed. Sometimes it was just moments of having to correct pronunciation so it's easier to understand.
Today's topic was favorite movies. We came up with idea to watch each other's favorite movies and use them as discussion points. She listed movies such as Up, Titanic, and About Time. Soyoung watches movies with subtitles in English, Chinese, and Japanese while of course watching others in Korean. She likes to practice reading and understand English as much as possible and it is clearly paying off because she is very well-spoken.
We also took a moment and talked about the difference between the popularity of certain movies in America and South Korea. It was actually really funny to us because movies popular in South Korea weren't as popular in America and vice versa. We both agreed, though, that movie-going is not as popular as it used to be and we kind of struggled to come up with favorite movies.
Even though we struggled a little, it was still fun talking about our favorite movies. It's a common ground no matter what language you speak. Movies are meant to be enjoyable whether you watch them with or without subtitles.
