Date/Time: 8 May / 4:30 - 5:30PM
Location: Student Lounge @ CIES
Topic/Skill: I met up with my tutee, Nanami,
who is from Fukushima, Japan. We discussed what she would like to accomplish
during her time here at CIES and what her educational plans are for the future.
She had informed me by email that she would like me to mainly help her with
reading/comprehension so I brought her some practice material and we chatted a
bit before lightly going over what I found to ensure it wasn't too difficult
for her.
Feedback provided to tutee: I gave some her
time to read the material and we went over a few of the comprehension
questions, some pronunciations of words, and unfamiliar vocabulary. Since it
was our first meeting, it was pretty casual and relaxed. We plan on going over
the other half of comprehension questions during our next meeting.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:
I felt much better knowing what Nanami actually wants out of our tutoring
sessions but I also realized that it is important to take the time to get to
know each other a little better first. I was impressed by the fact that she has
aspirations to attend Cornell University to further her education. She holds a
bachelor's degree in Political Science and she told me she likes to read
articles, particularly those written in The Economist. I want to keep her
background and interests in mind as I look for practice material to work on
together for our upcoming tutoring sessions.
