Topic/Skill: Speaking

Teacher Presentation: The instructor presented the students with different topic for the students to discuss. The class meeting prior to this was spent informing the students of discussion etiquette as well as roles, such as moderator, for the discussions. Each discussion was given a time limit in which the students had to discuss their opinions of the topic. The instructor moved around the classroom and silently observed the students during this time.

Classroom Management: The desks were arranged into smaller tables where students could sit in small groups for these discussions. The instructor provided each table with a recorder to record the discussions of the students. The instructor also lead the class by introducing each new topic and helping them transition to the next one. He also asked students to switch groups so their discussions could included a variety of opinions.

Materials: voice recorders, computer, projector, timer

Student Participation: I was pretty surprised by the level of participation that the students had. I had expected that the students would understand the topics presented to them and to be able to form their own opinions, but I was shocked at how well students were able to defend their opinions or reinforce the opinions of others. I even observed one student defend an opposing opinion just to make the discussion more interesting, even though it differed with that student's beliefs. I also observed some students laughing an enjoying themselves through this activity. Most students were actively participating in this activity.

Feedback Provided: The instructor too many notes on the behavior and speech of the students. The recorder were also used so that the instructor could provide more in depth feedback. Although there was no feedback in this class period, I can assume the next class period will be spent going over the teacher's observations of the class.

Lesson(s) on Teaching You Learned: I learned that stimulating the student's interests is really important. Because the students were so engaged in the topics of discussion, it helped to remove some of their filters when speaking as well as encouraged them to communicate efficiently with the other students at the table.
