Topic/Skill: Grammar
Teacher Presentation: Leslie Wagner, she used a powerpoint presentation to present a phrasal verb of the day, error corrections, and complex prepositions. She generally used the inductive teaching approach by asking the students if they knew what the phrase or word meant first, before giving the explanation.
Classroom Management: Students raised their hands and freely called out answers. She did have to ask some of the students to pay attention once.
Materials: Powerpoint presentation and the handouts in their binders
Student Participation: There were a few students that participated often, and a few that only spoke when they were asked to. All students were called on at least once
Feedback Provided: If students don't know the answer the professor would correct them, and then ask if they knew why that answer is correct over the others.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Since this is the first class that I have observed, I learned a lot about teaching.
- I liked how she began each day with a verbal phrase, and had them write it on a log with the definition so they could remember it.
- For error corrections, Leslie used errors that she had heard students make previously and then asked them to correct them. She also asked for reasoning and gave explanations as to why it was correct.
- For the complex prepositions, she reviewed the material from last year briefly. When going over the new prepositions, she first asked if anyone knew the difference between propositions of place and movement, explained them, and then gave them time to label all of the ones on the sheet. After labeling them, they went over them out loud in class giving each student the opportunity to answer.
