CO #2 Ryan Flemming Speaking 1A
So Tuesday I observed Mr. Flemming's class. Teaching wise he followed a similar method to Mrs. Davis using the "coach" model. However in teaching he had to have a much different approach because the class he was teaching was a much lower level than Mrs. Davis's class. Mr. Flemming did several things with the class that I thought to be very helpful and interesting. For example as much as possible Mr. Flemming used the over head projector to display things like the daily agenda or the exercise they were working on. He would then both read from the board and also ask questions and speak sentences related to what was on the board. I think in this way students can both hear and see what he is saying and assist them in both hearing and understanding English. He also used the deductive teaching model in some exercises. The theme of the day was descriptions and personal information so he would provide a series of questions. After spending a few minutes writing their answers down the students would then partner up and speak back and forth with each other. Mr. Flemming allowed and encouraged a lot of conversation both throughout the class and before and after. He asked students what there plans were, how their weekend was, and other small talk. I think this was a great way to sort of "break the ice" and get students talking to him and each other in English about their lives.
