Date/Time: May 7, 2017; 9:00-10:00 A.M.
Location: Home via Skype (Seoul/Jacksonville)
Topic/Skill: Favorites and getting to know one another/Listening
Feedback: Only occasional correction needed. Usually I just asked for clarification or repeated the sentence with the correction. I told her that her written English is clear and we do not really need to worry about it as much. She is primarily looking for a speaking and listening partner.
Lesson(s)/What I (we) learned:
Listening to each other can be very difficult. We learned--and unfortunately Soyoung learned it more than I did--that speaking to each other can create a lot of miscommunication and stress. I am naturally a very fast talker so I had to backtrack and re-explain myself. This is not Soyoung's fault but more my own for not taking into consideration the advantage I am at because I already know what I am saying or going to say. I learned that I need to slow down and make sure everything is clearly understood.
For the most part, we understood each other clearly and today was spent learning about each other and trying to make the experience as fun as possible. We talked about movies, pets, America vs South Korea--basically anything we wanted to know. I did not necessarily correct anything today because I wanted to spend the time talking with Soyoung and learning her way of speaking. She generally corrected herself or we allowed for pauses in the conversation so she could organize her thoughts.
I am looking forward to speaking with her again and talking about all the topics we wrote down.
Sounds like a great learning experience for both of you! :)
